Thomas Eugene Tocco, 88, passed away on Sunday May 7, 2017. Born in Logansport, Indiana September 28, 1928 to the late Francis and Sylvia Gaby Tocco, he was married to the late Emmie Tocco for 50 years. He was also preceded in death by his brother Francis “Junior” Tocco and his sisters Creda Day and Mary Musgrave.
Thomas served his country with honor for 22 years in the US Army in both the Korean and Viet Nam Wars, mainly in Army Aviation divisions, and was a First Sergeant. He was then a letter carrier with the US Postal Service for 20 years. He was a member of VFW Post #6002, DAV Chapter 2, and the NALC Branch #609.
He enjoyed traveling, but when he was home he would tend his vegetable garden, make wooden toys for his grandchildren, and loved to go fishing, especially with his grandson. He was a fan of both the Baltimore Orioles and the Indianapolis Colts.
Thomas is survived by his loving family, including his son Larry Tocco and wife Annemarie of Newport News; two daughters, Belinda Childress and husband Phil of Florida, and Cynthia Halberg and husband Brian of Seaford; brother Jerry Tocco and wife Donna; sisters, Marlene Reinholt, Joan Hipsher and husband Bill, Sandy Hipsher and husband Jim, Patricia Tocco, and Judy Brown, all of Indiana; grandchildren, Sarah Watson and husband Scott, Emily Childress, Paula Childress, and Brandon Halberg; and great-grandson, Zachary Watson. Also his brother-in-law, Minoru Okuyama; sisters-in-law, Tomoko Ariji and Hisako Okuyama, all of Tokyo, Japan; and numerous nieces and nephews in Indiana, Japan, and Okinawa. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Keith Taylor, he was not only a doctor to Thomas, but also a very good and caring friend.
A service of remembrance will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel, Thursday May 18 at 6:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5-6:00 pm on Thursday. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in his memory be made to Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Rd., Hampton, VA 23666. Our prayers are with you in your loss. Tom was our mailman for many years. In our opinion there has never been another that could be as good as he was..
He was a caring man and was excellent at his job.
