A beloved mother and YiaYia, Sylvia Rusos Matthews, 92, fell asleep in the Lord on Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, at VCU Medical Center, Richmond VA., surrounded by her family.
She was born January 24, 1924 in Rocky Mount, NC. She was married for 48 years to our loving father, the late John Louis Matthews. They lived in Newport News, VA and after retirement in 1976, they moved to Cobbs Creek, VA. Sylvia always worked next to her beloved husband; whether it was in the Ship Chandler business or numerous restaurants in Virginia. In January 2016, she moved to the Masonic Home of Virginia in Richmond and truly enjoyed her time there.
Since 1949, Sylvia was a faithful member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Newport News, Va. She also was an active member of the Philoptochos, the Hellenic Women’s Penelope Society, the Golden Hearts, and Daughters of Penelope. Her love of family, painting, sewing and Greek cooking will always be remembered.
Besides her parents, Sylvia is preceded in death by her husband and beloved son Lewis J Matthews. Left behind to cherish her memory is her son Nick J Matthews (Kathy), Joy Matthews, daughter-in law; 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; and 6 great great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at 5:00 pm, the Trisagion Prayer Service at 5:30 P M at the Church on Sunday, December 18th. Fr. George Chioros will be officiating the funeral on Monday, December 19th at 11:00 A M. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
