Suzanne Forehand

Suzanne “Suzie” Forehand, long-time resident of Virginia Beach, went to be with the Lord on February 16, 2022.  Suzie was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming on October 2, 1943 to Joseph James Shomon and Elizabeth Fain Shomon.  She grew up in Richmond, Virginia.

Suzie graduated high school from Saint Gertrude High School in Richmond, Virginia.  She earned her Bachelor’s degree from William and Mary, and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.  She later completed a Master’s degree program from George Washington University.

Suzie wed Benjamin “Butch” Forehand and they had one son, Michael Scott Forehand.  Together, Suzie and Butch, owned and operated The Helmsman Seafood Restaurant on 24th Street in Virginia Beach for several years (now known as Harpoon Larry’s).

Suzie began her career as a Social Worker, then became a teacher for Virginia Beach City Public Schools. She taught English at Kempsville Middle School and was a Gifted Resource Teacher at Plaza Middle School.  Her teaching career spanned more than 40 years, during which she inspired and influenced countless young people.

Suzie became a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 392.  She served two terms as President of The Ladies Auxiliary, and her volunteer work there touched the lives of many veterans in the community.

Suzie enjoyed cooking and travelling.  She always said cooking was her therapy.  Her family and friends frequently enjoyed delicious food she always liked to share.  She was well-traveled, and spent time in Europe, Hawaii and the Caribbean Islands.  She was a strong Christian and a prayer warrior who kept a daily prayer journal.

Suzie is survived by her son, Michael Scott Forehand, her daughter-in-law, Donna Marie Forehand, her sister, Nancy Patricia Lewis, her niece, Stephanie Elizabeth Baughn, and nephews James Gordon Lewis III, Jeremiah James Lewis and Noel Christopher Lewis.  She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday March 4 2022 at 2 pm at Galilee Episcopal Church on Pacific Avenue in Virginia Beach.  The service will be live-streamed on the church website or on the church YouTube channel at  The livestream will start 5 to 10 minutes prior to commencement of the service.

            A reception will take place following the Service at Tempt Restaurant in Virginia Beach.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society in Suzie’s honor, or to Buff’s Garden,

Scott and Donna, nothing can fill the void of a lost mother, but what peace we find in Jesus; knowing that we’ve been given the opportunity to see our loved ones again. Sending love, prayers and thoughts your way, always.
