Steven J. “Nick” Nicholson, 71, passed away on October 17, 2023 in Virginia Beach. Nick was born in Rhode Island to the late James Edward Nicholson and Miriam Nicholson.

He served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years and retired as a CWO4. His duty stations included RTC Great Lakes, 1971; USS Will Roger’s 71-75; Naval War College75-77; USS Will Roger’s 77-81; USS Alexander Hamilton SSBN-617Gold 81-83; Officer Candidate School 83; Surface Warfare Officers School 83-86; USS Baltimore SSN-704 86-87; USS KittiwakeASR-13 87-91; USS LY Spear, AS-36 91-95; COMSUBRON SIX 95-97; SSSU 97-99.

Summertime held a special place in his heart. Nick wore shorts year-round. Enjoying his pool was one of his favorite things. He loved Aruba and made it a point to visit annually with his family. A natural learner, Nick picked up the guitar, amongst other skills he loved to learn. Above all else, he had a die-hard love for New England.

Nick will be remembered for his kindness, compassion, and loving spirit.

Nick is survived by his wife, Susan Marie Nicholson; two sons, Sam Nicholson and Ashley Nicholson; and two grandchildren, Paris and Ashton.

The family will receive friends as well as hold a prayer service at Altmeyer Funeral Home -Southside Chapel, 5033 Rouse Dr. in Virginia Beach on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Condolences may be left for the family below.
