Sally Jane Nelson, 81, a native of Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, New York, peacefully departed this life to be with the Lord on Monday, September 11, 2023, in Newport News, VA. She was born on March 15, 1942, in Scotland Neck, North Carolina, the cherished daughter of Ethel and Robert Jackson, and a beloved sister to Robert Jr. and Barbara.
Sally’s educational journey led her to the halls of SUNY Old Westbury in Long Island, New York, and she furthered her academic pursuits at Columbia University, where she completed her Masters degree. For over two decades, she dedicated her professional expertise to the Office of Admissions at York College.
In the heart of a bustling city, Sally nurtured her two sons, Lionel and Darnell, alongside their father Lionel Jr.
Following her divorce, Sally chose to embrace the majority of her life as a single woman. Her devotion to family was surpassed only by her love for the theater and the arts. After retirement, she reveled in moments with cherished friends, embarked on exciting journeys, shared laughter-filled luncheons, and created vibrant blooms in her garden, often accompanied by her adored granddaughters. Sally’s philanthropic endeavors found a special place with the Christopher Newport University Theater Guild, where her contributions supported the aspirations of budding theater and dance students. She held a special fondness for the Broadway sensation, “Hamilton.”
Sally leaves behind a legacy of love, forever etched in the hearts of her oldest son, Lionel III, his devoted wife Alicia, and their three adored children, Lionel IV, his devoted wife Quinisha, Gabrielle, and Leah. Her younger son, Darnell, passed away, leaving behind his beloved daughter Brittany, who held a special place in Sally’s heart. Sally was also blessed with 5 great-grandchildren, Maddox, twins Dallas and Delany, and twins Jade and Naomi whose laughter and presence brought immense joy to her later years.
The service commemorating the extraordinary life of Sally will take place on Saturday, September 16th, from 2:00pm to 3:00pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave. Newport News, VA 23608.
