God does not give us more than we can bear and as a testament called Ruby Evelyn Crandol, 75, home on June 3, 2020. She was a native and lifelong resident of the Newport News, a graduate of Hampton High School and had retired after working 30 years for the Department of Energy at the Naval Reactors Office in Newport News Shipyard.
Evelyn was born to the late Milton Hayden Crandol and Ruby Fox Crandol on January 11, 1945 and is survived by her two brothers George and Wayne Crandol; sister, Peggy Chambers, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. To three nephews she was more like a mother; Paul, Ronnie, and Mike Miller. As well as a grandmother and great-grandmother to their children. She loved the Lord, her church, and her family as well as the Vassar family with a fire and a passion that is seldom seen.
She is preceded in death by both of her parents as well as three brothers Billy, Milton (Buck), and Jimmy Crandol as well as a sister, Carolyn Smith.
The family will receive visitors from 10:00AM to 12:00PM and Dr. Jay Russ, Pastor from Stevens Memorial Baptist Church will conduct the funeral service in honor of Evelyn’s life on Monday, June 8 at 12:00PM.
There will be a procession and short graveside service at Peninsula Memorial Park but due to COVID-19, Peninsula Memorial Park has requested that this be reserved for family only.

Another angel has earned her wings. Evelyn will truly be missed. I’ve enjoyed her pleasant personality, her beautiful smile and the many talks we’ve had at Epes Elementary school. Condolences to Paul, Tina and the family. Praying God gives you the strength and comfort needed during this time of bereavement.

I have fond memories of working with Evelyn from 1982-1986 at the NRRO (Newport News Shipbuilding). Evelyn and I worked closely as secretaries for the 25+ persons in the office. She was very dedicated to the office & really enjoyed bringing in homemade goodies for each holiday for the office to enjoy! May Evelyn Rest in Peace with our God.

I am so sorry to hear of Evelyn’s passing. I really enjoyed chatting with her at the end of the day in the hallway as she waited to pick up her grandaughter and I waited for the walkers. She was always helping Tina with book fair, PTA, or anything else we needed. I missed seeing her this year. My deepest sympathies, my prayers and thoughts are sent to the entire family. She will be so missed at Epes Elementary. It won’t be the same without her. Pat Kline
