Roy Emory Hendrix

October 27, 1935 - September 1, 2023

10/27/1935 - 09/01/2023

Local businessman, property owner/manager, former instructor, civil servant, and military veteran Roy E. Hendrix died September 1, 2023 at the age of 87. He was a self-made man with a sense of humor and concern for the community. Roy loved cooking, reading, traveling and gardening. Amazing community projects that Roy sponsored include a dormitory at Virginia Wesleyan University, where he served as a trustee; an outdoor program area at the Virginia Aquarium; refurbished churches in Portsmouth, VA and Portal, GA; The Roy E. Hendrix Business Center at Slover Library in response to COVID conditions; and a resident room at the new Dozoretz Hospice House of Hampton Roads. Roy adopted several dogs from the Virginia Beach SPCA and always named them “Prissy.” He served as a board member and president of the Little Theater of Norfolk and enjoyed food, fellowship and friends with the German Society. Roy was a graduate of Old Dominion University.

He leaves behind his nephew, Robert Hendrix and wife Tina, and a cousin, Joy Sawyer, and friends Fred Livermon, Francine Deir, and Lynn Clements. Thank you to the staff at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Assisted Living and Westminster-Canterbury at Home Hospice Care.

In typical Roy fashion, there will be no service as he wanted no fuss, and no bother. In his memory, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Virginia Beach SPCA, 3040 Holland Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23453.

Roy was my boss for a time at Fort Monroe VA. We travelled to Army posts around the US installing computer systems. It was always an adventure. He was such a caring, funny, and smart guy
