Robert “Bob” Leydet, 87, of Chesapeake, VA, passed away in the comfort of his home with his bride of 66 years, Joan, by his side.
Bob was born in Lenox, MA, and left to enlist in the U.S. Navy where he worked his way up to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3. He was most proud of this service to his country. He was a volunteer Firefighter with the City of Virginia Beach in his early retirement.
In his later years, he still traveled the U.S., just no longer on a ship. He had many adventures traveling with his wife and grandchildren. One memory his grandchildren fondly share is that Grandpa could make the stoplights turn green on command during their travels.
Bob always knew how to break the ice with strangers using his wonderful sense of humor.
In addition to his parents and siblings, Bob is preceded in death by his firstborn, Karen Becker.
Survivors left with a great hole in their hearts are Joan Leydet, his bride. His children Pam Lee, Brian Leydet, Steven Leydet, Debbie Rhodes and Valerie Leydet. Bob leaves 11 cherished grandchildren, 10 great- grandchildren, his oldest, dearest friend George Parks, many nieces and nephews and his dog Tiny.
A celebration of life service with military honors will be held on Saturday, July 16, at 2:00 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Chesapeake. For information and to express condolences to the family, visit www.altmeyerfh.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s dear memory to Navy Marine Corp. Relief Society, www.nmcrs.org.
