On Tuesday, February 1st, Rhonda Skenes Simmons of Norfolk lost her battle with cancer. She passed in the early morning hours surrounded by the love and presence of her family.
Rhonda was born July 15th 1956, the oldest child of Charlotte Akers (Gaskill). She attended Booker T. Washington High School and went on to obtain her cosmetology license. She worked for almost 40 years as a beautician. For the past several years, she had also been working as a companion to the sick and elderly. She formed many lasting bonds throughout the years with the women she worked with and the clients she loved.
The true loves of her life were her children, grandchildren, and her close knit but very large family. Her favorite things to do were to spend time with her grandchildren and have her painted toes in the sand at the beach. Rhonda will be remembered for many reasons. Her personality drew people to her. She had a smile so bright that would reach her sparkling blue eyes. Her heart was giving and she would quickly make you feel like family. She was truly beautiful on both the inside and the out.
Rhonda was preceded in death by her mother, Charlotte; and her nephew, Jonathan (Chris) Casey.
Mourning the loss of her are her children, Heather Esquerra (Jeff), Jena and Logan Simmons; The fathers of her children, William (Billy) Sutton and Leif Ray Simmons; her grandchildren, Ethan, Ava, Arrielle, Keegan, Korali, and one not yet born that she will never get a chance to meet; her brothers, Robert Skenes and Jeff Smith; sisters, Donna Skenes, Francis Koonce (Gary), and Sheryl Wilson; devoted family members, James and Charlotte Casey, Karen and Neil Lynch, Donna Walikangas, as well as beloved aunt Hazel Casey. Also grieving are many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
A celebration of her life will take place Tuesday, February 7th at 2 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1801 Baltic Ave. Virginia Beach, VA 23451. The family will receive visitors Monday, February 6th from 6 to 8 pm.

I have been best friends with Rhonda’s sister, Donna, since the 4th grade. We always enjoyed sharing stories about our older Sisters. Rhonda was always a joy to be around. I know she loved her children, grand children and entire family. She will be missed greatly. My deepest condolences to the Family.

I have known Rhonda for about 15 years. I had the honor of sharing a granddaughter (Arrielle) with her. I will always have fond memories of all the birthday parties, Easter egg hunts, cook-outs etc. The year she dressed up like a Princess to make Arrielle’s party
special. Arrielle would be so excited to tell me she was going to “hang out” with NaNa.
RIP Rhonda.

I have known Rhonda for over 40 years. Aunt Hazel would always take us to the beach at ocean view were we laugh, ate and used Hazel SPECIAL sun tan lotion to see who could get the darkest.
