Rebecca Elizabeth “Betty” (Barton) Powell

Our beloved mother, Betty, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. She was a native of Elizabeth City, NC, and a Newport News resident for 51 years. She was a 1947 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth. She retired from Langley AFB civil service in 1988. She was a member and organist at Riverside Baptist Church for about 25 years. She studied piano, organ, and voice, performing in churches and locations where we lived around the country.

Mother was preceded in death by both of her husbands, Wallace Powell (2011) and Jack Barton (1986). She was also preceded in death by her son, Ronnie (2019); her grandson, Chris Adderley (2021); and her 3 siblings, Robert Sawyer, Norman Sawyer, and MayBelle Ballance.

She is survived by Steve Barton (& Cheryl), Deborah Adderley (& Phillip), and Rebecca “Becky” Cash (& Glenn); also 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Mother spent her last 9 years at Warwick Forest Retirement Community – the last 4 of which were spent in their memory unit at Evergreen. She had end stage kidney disease and Alzheimer’s disease for a number of years. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
