Philip L. Escuadra (“Phil, Tay Eping”) passed away peacefully at home on July 18, 2023. He was born 97years ago and grew up in Janiuay, Iloilo Philippines, the 10th of 12 children and 1 of 9 boys. Phil joined the Philippine Navy then enlisted in the US Navy in 1954, served 31 years, retiring as chief quartermaster. Duty commands and stations included numerous ships, few shore duty billets, which kept him away at sea for much of his Navy career.
He retired from the Navy in 1985 and enjoyed an active retirement: completed pre law and community college classes, attended ODU Lady Monarch basketball and Tidewater Tides games and watched his Washington Redskins football games. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, time with grandchildren and weekend Atlantic City casino trips with his lucky charm/”wifey” of 54 years, Julie and family friends.
Phil was a longtime member of Knights of Columbus, attained 4th degree Knight status, was active with KOC Council #367 and KOVAR activities. He was also a member of the Kahirup Visayan Philippine Group, served as an officer.
He was a faithful, longtime member of Christ the King Church since 1970, served as Eucharistic minister and regularly attended 11am Mass.
Always smiling and optimistic, Phil’s strong faith, love for God, family, country and his generosity shall always be remembered.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Luciano & Romualda Escuadra, wife Julie Mital Escuadra, son Joey Escuadra and his 11 siblings in Philippines.
Surviving family includes: daughter Mary Jane Teall (Gary), son John A. Escuadra, grandchildren Diane Teall Evans (Neil), Lauren Teall, Gannon Teall and Kaelyn Escuadra; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Our family would like to thank Dad’s wonderful caregivers: Elizabeth “Pigeon”, Keena Nila, Aya, Marivic, Connie, Sarah and Elma. And special thanks to Trinity Hospice, Dr. Lea LaPlace and Patriot Guard Riders, Hampton Roads, District 5.

He looks like John. What a life 97 years, you were blessed!
Chief Escuadra was a good shipmate and a good friend. I served with him on USS Dewey and USS Leahy. He looked out for his crew. This picture was taken April 21, 1969. Phil “found” a birthday cake for me in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean! He left some good memories for many of us.
PGK John, our condolences to you and your family on the loss of our Beloved Papi. May his soul RIP, and may God keep you and your family in His everlasting and consoling Love.

John,
It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen/talked to you, but our thoughts and prayers are with you during your time of grief.
Keep your memories close to your heart.
Uncle Philip and Auntie Juliet supported me, when I first came to America in 11/95 until I got my RN job here in California. I was his assistant in checking the apartments , while I was still there until 10/96. I learned a lot of things from him like forgiveness, be positive in life, pursue your dreams. Thank you , Uncle Philip. Even if I could not personally say bye this Saturday, but my quick visit to you, 2 weeks ago is the most treasured moment, I love you, Uncle.
Love Neneng Alice
Our heartfelt condolences to my cousins, Jane and John
