Melva Frances Riggs

Melva Frances Riggs, 100, passed away Thursday, December 15, 2016. She was a local girl born in Princess Anne County, to the late Bennett W. and Rosa V. Hartley Whitehurst, and graduated from Oceana High School in 1933. She was preceded by her husband, Travis J. Riggs and her daughter Martha Sue Riggs. Melva worked for Kellam High School in the Cafeteria and was a lifetime member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where she played the piano for 55+ years.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, June R. Waterman (Maurice); sons, Terry L. Riggs (Chris), and James S. Riggs; nephews, Donavon Bonney (Jacqueline), Arleigh Waterman (Jean); niece, Nancy Stamper; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Melva’s family is grateful to the many neighbors, family and friends that have supported her and her family.
A service to celebrate her life will be held Monday, December 19,2016 at 11:00am at Tabernacle United Methodist Church with burial in Willowwood Cemetery following. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3 – 5:00pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home-Maestas Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tabernacle UMC Heritage fund.
