5GMaureen Theresa Strassle, 88, went to be with the Lord on July 22, 2022. Maureen was born in Queens, New York to the late Charles and Marie Gordon on August 1, 1933.
Maureen loved staying active, whether as a nationally ranked Olympic caliber swimmer in her younger years, on the tennis court or at the links. Maureen dedicated her life to serving others as a registered nurse and valued the need for constant learning to make the most of her abilities. She remained active as a health care provider well into later life, caring for the elderly and volunteering as a school nurse. A prolific letter writer, she always remembered birthdays and special events for family, friends and helpers throughout her life.
Other than her parents, Maureen is preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 59 years Arthur Lincoln Strassle; sister, Helen O’Grady and brother, Charles Gordon. She also cherished her many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who left before her.
Maureen was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith and her family. Left to cherish her loving memory are her children, Ellen Giordano and husband James, Arthur Strassle, and Charles Strassle and wife Heather; grandchildren, John “Jack” and Adam Strassle; many more extended family members and friends. And her constant companion and loving dog Boo.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Apostle, 1968 Sandbridge Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23456, on Thursday, July 28th 2022 at 2:00 pm. The burial will follow on Long Island, New York at St Charles Resurrection Cemetery, 2015 Wellwood Ave, Farmingdale, NY 11735, on Tuesday, August 2nd 2022 at 11:00 am. I remember fondly my visits to Connecticut, usually around the Christmas holidays. Maureen (and Art) were always so welcoming. Her sharp humor & quick wit made me laugh, and those qualities were so nicely complimented by her caring and kindness. My condolences to Art, Ellen and Charlie.
Maureen Strassle was always a favorite of my mother’s cousins. She had such a dry wit, that even as kids, we all knew Maureen could make anyone laugh! Although the Strassle family moved a few times, somehow we got together here and there. Maureen remained the same – kind, fun, vivacious and interesting. She also had a unique ability to make you feel comfortable in her presence. Maureen also wanted the families to remain close. Her three children, Ellen, Artie, and Charlie are wonderful people, just like their parents. My family and I were blessed to know Maureen who now lives peacefully with our Lord.
Maureen (and Art) were clients at first but became much more than that over the years that I knew them and came to know their family. I loved her spunky independence, her unexpected phone calls just to say “hello”, her kind (and long) notes, and we never ended a conversation when she didn’t say. . . “Take it easy!” the long, drawn-out way that became her trademark! Maureen always asked about my family and I knew she was truly interested. She was a spirited and loving friend, and I will miss her terribly.
I wouldn’t be able to count the number of times Maureen welcomed me at the Strassle family home. Her hospitality and dry sense of humor are what stand out in my memory, as well as her admirable commitment to caring for others. I will forever be grateful for the children she brought into this world. Thinking of all of you with a heavy heart.
Wil always remember her sardonic and beautiful smile, matched only by her dry wit and hearty laugh. RIP Maureen!
I’ll always remember Maureen’s thoughtfulness and feel blessed that she welcomed me as a family member. My thoughts are with you all.
