Matt graduated from Webster County High School in 1996 and from the Newport News Apprentice School, part of Newport News Shipbuilding (a division of Huntington Ingalls Inc.), in December 2002. He graduated with the G. Guy Via Award.

Matt & Myself both started in the shipyard around the same time. I met Him early in my career there. Always loved working with him, talking to him and occasionally sharing a few beers after work. He was as genuine of a man & person that you would ever meet or know. He always stressed to me how much his children meant to him & we would often share stories about our children. I hope His children know he was a man they could be very proud to call their father & that he was one of the good ones in this world. My prayers go out to his entire family, Wife, Children & all of his friends and co workers. Gonna miss you big fella. Love ya & I’ll see you on the other side my brother. Rest easy my guy.

I know that I am not the only one to say I will miss you. Knowing that your presence will never be forgotten! It will be felt forever. As we continue walking by your desk, know we will never forget you! I know what time we had with you, your family had more! God has you now, although we are left with your earthly absence, I know we will see you again. Watch over us. We will see you soon! Prayers to your family, I know you will be there with them. God Bless.
