Mary Russell Bess, 91, of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away on Monday, October 23rd, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on August 18th, 1932 to Vance and Maddie Russell. She was a graduate of Norview High School in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mary was married to the love of her life, Ervin Leon Bess for 48 years. Their union brought fourth three children, Edmond Leon Bess, Debra Lynn Bess, and Kimberly Marie Bess. Mary’s family meant everything to her. In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling, playing hand and foot canasta with the girls, going to luncheons, and most of all traveling to Carova Beach to spend time with her friends and family. Mary worked for the Verizon telephone company and retired after 30 years. She later worked for American Greetings which she grew to love well into her 70s.

In addition to being predeceased by her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Ervin, her daughter, Debra, and her grandson, Jason W. Bess. Left to cherish her memory are her son Edmond L. Bess (Wife Pamela) and her daughter Kimberly B. Meinberg (Husband Roy). She is also survived by her Grandchildren; Tomora C. Woolard (Dewayne), Erick L. Bess (Dawn), Tavern C. Meinberg (Alesa), Amber B. Joyal (Aaron), Heather M. Sprayberry (Jason), Nicole R. Cadenhead (Chad); Great Grandkids; Kamdon J. Meinberg, Kielee R. Meinberg, Karl R. Meinberg, Kash DE. Meinberg, Coedy T. Bess, Ty A. Woolard, Madison J. Woolard, Savannah L. Joyal, Summer R. Cadenhead, Taylor M. Joyal, Ervin G. Sprayberry, Dean H. Cadenhead, Winter R. Sprayberry, Charlene R. Cadenhead, and a host of cousins and loving friends.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday, November 2nd, 2023 at The Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Dr. in Virginia Beach led by Officiant Dewayne D. Woolard. In lieu of flowers, please visit www.tmcfunding.com to make donations to The American Cancer Society in Mary’s honor.
