Mary Elizabeth Gebhardt, 83, of Virginia Beach, departed this life on August 11, 2022. She was born to Bernard and Regina Thurston in Boston, Massachusetts on June 21, 1939, where she was raised and educated in the catholic church system.
Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband Jimmie M. Bethea, her brother, George (Sonny) Thurston, and a sister Margaret (Peggy) Kostival. Left to cherish her memory is her present husband and companion of nearly 38 years, John R. Gebhardt of Virginia Beach, one son James E. Bethea (Cindy), of Norfolk, two granddaughters, Amber R. Schools and Mary K. Bethea, both of Cynthiana, Kentucky. She is also survived by five sisters, two brothers, and a whole host of nieces and nephews.
There will be a viewing between the hours of 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, VA. Burial will be private at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA. A celebration of Mary’s life will take place at VFW Post 4809, Norfolk, VA on a time and date to be determined and announced at a later date.
