Graveside Service

Marion Elizabeth Messmer Matthews died on June 13, 2015 at home with family after a long life of nearly 97 years filled with joy and love. Her husband of 42 years, Robert Alton Matthews preceded her in death on May 22, 1992. Marion is survived by three children, their spouses and her grandchildren (Catherine & Timothy – Ryan, Garrett & Erin; John & Beth – Grant & Kristen; and Jerry & Dawn – Paige & Bryan) all of whom adored her. Marion is also survived by her long-term care giver, Pat McMahon and her family as well as her much more recent care giver, Yvonne Melvin and her family.
Marion was born on July 24, 1918 in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles & Catherine Messmer. Both parents died when Marion was quite young. She was raised by her mother’s brother and sister in Asheville, North Carolina. Marion was predeceased by her sister, Edna Catherine Messmer Jarrett and her cousins, Daisy and Gladys, with whom she was raised. Marion is survived by her husband’s two sisters, Virginia Dare Matthews and Ethleen Matthews Brown Ward and their spouses, Phil Jackson & Walter Ward. Marion had many friends and neighbors and some of these individuals also preceded her in death.
Marion was a lifelong member of local Baptist churches, first Aragona Baptist Church, then Lynnhaven Baptist Church followed by Brooks Baptist Church. Her faith in her lord was unwavering throughout her life.
Marion was a homemaker who loved children throughout her life. In lieu of flowers the family suggests you send them a short story or favorite memories. If you would like to make a donation in her honor please do so to your favorite charity.   Union Mission was a charity that Marion liked.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Friday, June 19th, 2015 at Rosewood Memorial Park at 631 North Witchduck Road at 3 PM. The family will receive friends and family at Marion’s home after the graveside service.
