Maria D. Vazquez

Maria Dolores Hernandez Vazquez, born July 9, 1942, in Vieques, Puerto Rico, where she was raised thru her teen years. In the 1960’s she would move to New York City where she would start and raise her family, while working in the city’s Jewelry District.
She was an excellent seamstress and made clothes for her children when they were young. In 1981 she moved to Newport News, Virginia, where she would spend the rest of her life, with the exception of a few years in Hawaii, ’82-’85.
In VA, she became a hairdresser, and was owner/operator of Salon New York. Maria would retire and enjoy many years at home. To say she was an excellent cook would be an understatement and she loved making desserts.
She was very handy around the house to the point where she got the nickname “Stanley”, as in the tool company, she had many tools and knew how to use all of them.
Maria passed away peacefully with her family at her bedside on December 16, 2022, she was 80 years old. She is survived by children, Ricardo Rosa, Myra Vazquez, and Laura Vazquez. Grandchildren, Cynthia Richards, Natalia Holloman, Samara Vazquez, and Great-Grandson Victor Richards.
Maria was very generous, giving when she didn’t have much to give. She was a kind gentle soul.
