Lena Leigh Johnson Nichols was born to William and Hazel Gray Johnson on October 21, 1929 in Norfolk, Virginia. She was taken to rest by the Master on October 18, 2015. She is predeceased by her parents, William and Hazel Johnson, her grandmother, Sarah Faulks Gray, her daughter, Pamela Ann Nichols, her sister, Barbara McCoy, and her loving husband Robert E. Nichols, Sr. Mourning her memory are her five children, Robert E. Nichols, Jr(Marilyn), Gail Nichols DeBerry, Sharon Nichols Lee, Kimberly Nichols Roberson, and William Nichols (Angelia). She also leaves 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren to cherish her memory. She was affectionately known by the grandchildren as Ma-ma. She is also survived by a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in 1947, she attended Norfolk State College. Participating in her high school class reunion was one of her favorite activities and she was active in the group for years. Lena was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of the choir for many years until she could no longer serve. She was a charter member of The Voices of Norfolk and The I. Sherman Green Chorale. Singing brought joy to her heart and she had the voice of an angel.
Church, family, and friends were three of the most important things in her life. She was an excellent home maker and was loved and adored by many. She was a jack of all trades and master of most. She was a pillar in the community where she resided in Crestwood Manor in Chesapeake, VA. She was a girl scout leader, officer in the PTA, and officer in the Neighborhood Community Conscience. She was a volunteer for the March of Dimes and collected in the neighborhood every year.
Home going services will be Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at 11:00 am. Viewing will be at 10:00 am at the church, one hour before the service.

To the Nichols family:
Your mother has shed her earthly robe and her spirit has been released to explore new beginnings in higher realms of God’s love. Her spirit will always dwell in you for “All is One” in “Spirit and Truth” of Our Creator. Be blessed and may peace, love and joy bring comfort your soul!
