Leanora J. Miller, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2023, in Newport News, VA. She was born on February 19, 1932, to Mary and George Day.

Leanora led a fulfilling life, touching the hearts of many through her various roles and interests. She began her career as a Hostess at Ft. Eustis Officer Club, where her warm welcoming nature shone through. Leanora’s passion for cooking led her to start her own catering business, which brought joy and delicious meals to countless people.

Outside of work, Leanora found solace in her garden, tending to vibrant flowers and lush greenery. She also enjoyed spending time indoors, solving puzzles and crosswords that challenged her mind. Leanora’s compassionate spirit extended beyond her own family, as she served as a Foster Parent for the city of Newport News, providing love and support to children in need.

Leanora was a devoted member of Rising Sun Baptist Church, where she found peace and strength in her faith. She was baptized in the York River, a significant moment in her spiritual journey. In her younger years, Leanora’s dedication to education shone brightly as she achieved the honor of Valedictorian from Morrison High School’s class of 1948.

Leanora was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Day; father, George Day; sisters, Eva Etter, Queen Carr, and Georgia Faye Day; brother, Robert Day; daughter, Phyllis Jamerson; and son, Bobbie Jo Miller.

She is survived by her loving son, Don Miller (Michelle), and daughter, Shirley Miller. Leanora cherished her role as a grandmother, and her grandchildren, Garlita Kennedy (Aaron), Don Miller II (Daphne), Peyton Jamerson, Justin Miller (Keyla), and Brittany Anderson, held a special place in her heart. Her great-grandchildren, Maceo Miller, Alessandro Miller, Kahari Jordan, Nazir Jordan, and Amari Graham, brought her immense joy and happiness. As well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Leanora J. Miller’s presence will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will continue to inspire and guide us in our own lives.

The passing of my Aunt brings me great sadness as she was my Father’s last living sister. I reflect on her in my life as my babysitter, on holidays, cooking at Church, and regular visits. I miss her and although I have not seen her in years that saddens me even more. Then I think that she never had the opportunity to meet my children, the next generation and they have no memories of her to take with them. But, all is not lost, in my father’s footsteps I will share pictures and tell great stories about my aunt as her “Little Black Boy” as she often called me. I love my Aunt, all of my Aunts. I love y’all and I will miss you. Rest now and join your brother and sisters. Be at peace.

Just a few words of comfort. God called Aunt Lee ” HOME,” we feel that she ran a good Race, her Victory has been WON ! GOD (we believe) said to Aunt Lee, ” my child come on home with me, where every day will be SUNDAY, YOU will not have to suffer with pain no more. Aunt Lee is absent from us,(body) but she is present with The Lord ! May God bless each of you and Heaven continue to smile upon you.
