Karen Sue Sittig, 75, went home to be with the Lord on March 31, 2024.  An only child, she was born to Lula Mae and Kerney Kemp Guthrie in Norfolk, VA on September 17, 1948.  She leaves behind her husband, William Elmer Sittig, Jr.  They were married for 50 years.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Dawn Marie Mendez and her husband Chris Mendez of Apex, NC and Amanda Ruth Bruns and her husband Matt Bruns of Bluffton, SC.  Also surviving her are six grandchildren; Ava Elise Mendez, Owen Silas Mendez, Cecilia Julianne Mendez; Lily Madelyn Bruns, Maribel Jane Bruns, and Norah Faith Bruns.

Karen attended St. Louis Institute of Music in Missouri where she received her piano teaching certificate.  Karen was a piano teacher at her home for 21 years and had 26 piano students at the time of moving to South Carolina.  Karen served the Lord as a church pianist.

Karen worked as a clerk stenographer at both the Custom House in downtown Norfolk and then at the Naval Safety Center, Naval Air Station, Norfolk until the birth of her first child.  She then took on the greatest and most rewarding occupation of all as a stay-at-home mom.  She served at Norfolk Christian School as a room mother, chapel pianist, school play pianist, choral pianist and temporary choral director.  She served in churches as Director of Children’s Choirs, Sunday School teacher and Director of Ladies’ Bible Study groups.

In May 2018 she and her husband moved to Bluffton, SC to be taken care of by one of their daughters until they would go to their home in heaven.  Karen’s greatest desire was to live a Christian life that revealed the glory of God both through her service to God and love for others.  She could have no better calling in life than to be a wife, mother and grandmother.  She enjoyed bringing joy to others and developing lasting friendships.  Traveling to see God’s creation brought much satisfaction to her life. Her nickname was very fitting – SPARKLE.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Friday (April 12, 2024) at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 50333 Rouse Drive, VA Beach VA 23464.

Celebration of Karen’s Life Service will be at Suburban Christian Church, 5132 Bellamy Manor Dr, Virginia Beach, VA 23464 on Saturday (April 13, 2024) at 10:30 AM.   Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Cemetery, 631 N Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA.  Everyone should feel free to wear pretty colors in honor of her.

Karen’s funeral service will be live streamed and may be watched by going to https://sccvb.org/live-streaming

Karen was always such a joy to be around. Full of life and laughs. Her fingers at the piano were magical! She had more energy than a toddler and the competition playing a game of Spoons was fierce. There was never a dull moment. Her heart was pure as gold and she loved all. Heaven has gained an angel. My life has been blessed to call her friend and family thru the marriage of our children. I will miss you and your sweet spirit. Rest in the arms of Jesus ❤️

It’s with great sorrow to lose the Best pianist God had created. I Loved when she would accompany Me in Church when I was singing you didn’t have to worry about making mistakes because She had your back, I have truly missed that every single She first moved to S.C. and look forward to doing it again in God’s Heavenly Choir. To the Family We Pray God’s Love, Peace and Grace fill your Hearts with Joy in such a time as this.
