Judy Ann Nelson, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, breathed her soul away into Heaven on March 10, 2024, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, surrounded by the love and prayers of those in attendance. She was born on November 18, 1941, in Evanston, Illinois. She was 82 years old.

Judy was a graduate of Palatine High School and went on to have a successful career as an Office Manager at Givens in Chesapeake, Virginia before her retirement. She was a faithful member of Ascent Church, where she found joy in attending and serving. Judy’s interests were varied and included gardening, caring for the birds and squirrels in her backyard, completing challenging crossword puzzles in pen, and enjoying fond memories of her traveling and camping adventures.

Her sharp sense of humor, sassy demeanor, and unwavering determination were just a few of the characteristics that endeared her to all who knew and cared for her. Judy faced life’s challenges with grace and resilience, leaving a lasting impact on those around her.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents, Walter E. Nelson and Ethel Montanaro Nelson, her sister Eileen Nelson, and her son-in-law Tom Grocott. She is survived by her children, Mark (Kimmi) Michalisko, Tom Michalisko, and Karen Carroll, her nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and her sister Kathleen Nelson all of whom she cherished deeply.

The family extends their special thanks to Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the compassionate staff at Westminster Canterbury Hospice for their exceptional care and support during Judy’s final days.

We will always remember and deeply miss Judy for her quick-witted comebacks, generosity, and optimistic outlook on life. Although it brings us comfort to know that the troubles of this world no longer bind her, it is still difficult to accept her absence. We like to imagine that she is now free to dance and shimmy with joy! Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who love her and in the way we show compassionate love for others.

A Celebration Of Life for Judy will take place at 3:00pm on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside Chapel. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, tribute be paid by donating in her name by clicking either link for the American Bird Conservancy or Alzheimer’s Association.
