Joyce Mary Banus passed away on September 30, 2023 in her home in Virginia Beach, VA.
Joyce was born in New York City on August 11, 1956. During her 67 years, she lived in Florida, California, and Virginia and was proud to have visited many destinations worldwide. She shared a love of traveling with her husband of over 25 years, Stephen Banus, and together they enjoyed spending time in Italy, France, and several Caribbean islands. Joyce also enjoyed planning vacations with her daughter and together they visited Canada, Greece, New Zealand, and Australia. She lived an adventurous life full of interesting new sights and experiences.
Joyce grew up and spent most of her young adult life in Baldwin and Jacksonville, FL, where many dear friends and relatives still reside. While Florida was her first home, she would often say that she found the most joy in Virginia Beach, VA where she could enjoy the oceanfront and local shops and restaurants with friends and family. She built innumerable friendships here through her many years working as an accounting manager and by leaving a positive impression on all who met her with her kindness, generosity, and good humor.
Joyce had many skills and hobbies including being an avid reader and excellent writer. She also enjoyed discovering new music, movies, and theatrical productions and demonstrated natural skills in gardening, cooking, and art. She took pride in finding unique and interesting activities to share with those she loved.
She is survived by her daughter and only child, Stephanie Banus (husband Travis Cruse and the beloved “grandkitties”); her mother, Virginia Petry; her sister, Jean Butler and family; and many wonderful cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families. There are too many friends and loved ones to name specifically, but our family sincerely appreciates everyone who has had a meaningful impact on Joyce’s life.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Best Friends Animal Society, a renowned charitable organization that aims to reduce unnecessary animal deaths through education, shelter funding, and volunteer engagement nationwide. Everyone who knew Joyce knew that she loved animals, and she would be thrilled to know that pets are receiving much needed care and finding loving homes through donations in her name.
