Jim R. Hudgens, age 78, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, January 12, 2024, at Select Medical Hospital in Newport News, Virginia. He was born May 28, 1945, in McDonald County, Missouri, to Joseph (Joe) Hudgens and Hazel Hudgens.

While serving honorably in the Navy in Maine, he met the love of his life, Sally LaFrance. Jim and Sally were married on May 7, 1966, in Bar Harbor, Maine.

In addition to his military service, he also worked for the U.S. Federal Government in various roles over 48 years. Jim retired from Jefferson Labs as a Contracting Manager, a role he continued to be proud of for the rest of his life. Jim believed in service to his country, and he lived that belief.

When not working, he enjoyed being with his family and he was always adding to his knowledge. He was a voracious reader, and he would find something that fascinated him on any topic. Our father will be remembered most for his great sense of humor and compassion.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sally Hudgens, and daughters, Laura Vicik and Judith Hudgens, and their husbands, Gregg Vicik and Graeme Smith, as well as sister, Judy Smith and brother, Gary Hudgens, brother-in-law Eric LaFrance and granddaughter Chechnia Vicik.

Family, friends, and others whose lives Jim touched are invited to the St. Vincent de Paul CatholicChurch where a Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m on February 17, 2024. Following the Mass will be a visitation at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, 7415 River Rd. Newport News, VA 23607, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. on February 17, 2024 for a visitation with his family.

Uncle Jim cast a long shadow. Not just because he was tall. My mom had a tremendous respect and admiration for him. That passed to her kids. The three of us had an example of success and accomplishment in Uncle Jim. I admired him apart from my Mom’s influence and will keep his example in my heart.

My sincere condolences to the Hudgens’ family and friends. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I worked with Jim at the Department of Energy office at Jefferson Lab and he was truly a GREAT guy that was so proud of his entire family (and especially his beautiful granddaughter)!!! He would talk endlessly of his wonderful family and always showed me his latest pictures of them!! He was so proud of his home that he purchased on Huntington Avenue and was so excited in making that a special place for his entire family to enjoy/love!! He took me on a personal tour shortly after his purchase and it was an amazing/fabulous place!! I was truly blessed to have known/worked with Jim and he will be truly missed!!! They definitely do not make guys like Jim anymore and that is the understatement!!!!

My condolences to the entire Hudgens family. I worked with Jim and he was an outstanding human being. He carried himself so well in both his work and personal life. One who was so proud of his family and proud of his country. Our talks were enlightening and entertaining. I will always describe him as distinguished, respectful, intelligent, and my friend.
