Janice “Jan” Mae Boone Farris, 75, peacefully joined her Lord on Sunday, September 17, 2023 with her family by her side. A King and Queen resident, she was born on May 17, 1948 to Eliga and Mary Mae Blevins Boone, who precede her in death.
Jan worked as a correctional and security officer for most of her life. She loved working but retired early due to her lifelong autoimmune illness of Lupus, which she faced bravely. Jan moved to Florida for 22 years where she and her husband made a loving home. She was very strong in her faith and read her family Bible nearly every day. She was quick-witted and often exchanged jokes and remarks with her lively husband. She loved working in her garden and maintaining her backyard pond with her furry companion, Sassy. Jan believed a glass of wine a day was perfectly healthy and partook with her evening meal. Nutrition was very important to her, and she always shared her wealth of knowledge about the food industry. Most of her meals included fresh vegetables from her garden and even apples from her apple trees. She loved swimming in her pool while her husband prepared fresh fish on the grill.
Jan is preceded in death by her loving husband of 26 years, Douglas (Doug) C. Farris; brothers Blaine, Victor Lacey, and Richard “Dick” Boone; best friend and sister-in-law Vicki Boone; brother-in-law Frankie Ayers; beloved dog Sassy.
She is survived by brothers Jerry and Robert (Lynne) Boone; sisters Sherry Lisa Alderman (Todd), and Marge Ayers; daughters Cheryll Denice Colley and Amanda Lehto (Nick); son Darrell Colley; grandchildren Ashley Parson (Terrance), Richard “Dusty” Beverly (Mandy), Meagan and Caitlyn French, Jessica and Darrell “DJ” Colley Jr. and their 2 half siblings; 10 great-grandchildren and an 11th due in April; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services to celebrate Jan’s life will be held on Thursday, September 21, at Beulah Wesleyan Church, 1539 Lewis B. Puller Memorial Highway, Saluda, VA 23149 at 1 pm. An interment is to follow where she will be buried next to her parents. Altmeyer Funeral Home Riverside Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
Jan will be remembered for her strong willed personality and love for her family. Her large family will cherish her memory until we meet again.
