Deacon JJ Jackson, known to all he met as JJ, passed away in his home on March 20, 2023 at the age of 81. He became a Deacon on March 19, 2000 at First Baptist Church of Hampton. JJ leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 38 years, Bernice E. Jackson.

He has lived in Hampton, Virginia for the last 38 years. JJ was born in Painesville, Ohio, on September 18, 1941. He was the last born of seven children to Nathaniel Jackson and Ruth Jackson Caldwell. JJ left Ohio when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. His time in the U.S. Air Force allowed him to attend various schools majoring in law enforcement, all while he was on extensive travel around the world.

After 17 years of being in the U.S. Air Force, he was sent to Hampton, Virginia where we set eyes on one another. Our meeting was when we attended a night spot in Hampton, Virginia. He was one sharp-dressing, three-piece wearing man that attracted me to him. I later found out that he was a Security Police in the Air Force. He was very sharp and wore his uniform gracefully, proud and with authority. That also impressed me and I told him so. He was very proud of his uniform and himself. JJ and I dated for two years, and that courtship led to marriage. On October 25, 1968 we said our vows which have lasted us 36 years. Five years into marriage, JJ retired with 22 years in the U.S. Air Force. His love for being a policeman enabled him to decide on staying in law enforcement. He applied to the Hampton Sheriff where he worked in the Hampton Sheriff Department for 2 years before illness took a toll on him and he was forced to medically retire from the Sheriff Department. JJ was not the type of person to just sit around, so he volunteered to be a caregiver to our granddaughter.

JJ was a father and caregiver to his wife, Bernice Jackson; 3 sons, Melvin Perry, Anthony Perry, and Dezmund Perry Jackson; Tekayla L. Perry, granddaughter whom he volunteered to caregiver for when she was a newborn into her infancy to keep him company while I was at work; and two great-granddaughters from Tekayla. In Ohio, my loving husband leaves behind 6 other children: 4 sons, 2 daughters, 9 granddaughters, and 2 great-grandchildren.

We extend our condolences to the Jackson family. Deacon Jackson was a beautiful church worker. He labored in several ministries, and was a devout deacon. He loved people and he loved serving. Such a role model to behold. Prayers to Mrs. Jackson and the entire family. – Trustee and Mrs. Anthony Fairfax
