CHESAPEAKE – James “Jim” Morris Spicer, Sr, 88, passed peacefully at home June 20, 2022. James was born into and raised in a family of proud sharecroppers in Wayne County, NC to the late Willie Thomas Spicer and Pearl Hester Spicer. Jim married his high school sweetheart, Gracie, in 1955. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railway as a Conductor after 36 years of service. Jim enjoyed watching all types of sports, gardening and above all spending time with his family. He loved attending his children’s sporting events and then later, his grandchildren’s sporting events.
Jim was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Ann Brooks and siblings, Shurwood Spicer, Durwood Spicer, Gordon Spicer, Paul Spicer, and Ella Frances Caudle.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 67 years, Gracie McDuffie Spicer; children, Almeta Spicer of Chesapeake, Sue Doherty (Bill) of Moyock, and James “Jimmy” Spicer, Jr. (Sharon) of Portsmouth; grandchildren, Michael, Julius, Angela and Olivia; five great grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Chesapeake, for a Celebration of Jim’s Life on Friday, June 24th from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Express condolences to the family at www.altmeyerfh.com.

I met your Dad my first day on the railroad. He was a mountain of a man with the heart of a gentle giant. There were many stories about his powerful strength most of which were true, some I even witnessed. His great character was certainly passed on to reflect in you! Rest In Peace big Jim
