Hirst (aka Jo) M. Rush, born on January 19th, 1933, in West Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 21st, 2023 in Virginia. At the age of 90, Jo had lived a life full of passion, kindness, and elegance.

Jo’s career spanned over 22 years as a Home-Economics teacher for Norfolk Public Schools. She was known to be patient and dedicated to her students, and her brilliant teaching skills were only matched by her love for gardening. Her green thumb earned her a membership in the Hunt Country Garden Club, where she shared her knowledge with other enthusiasts. Jo’s creative side was brought to life through her sewing skills, having made garments for her children when they were young, and her talent for ceramics.

Jo made quite an impact in her community. As a member of the First Baptist Church of Norfolk, she epitomized proper manners and politeness, never uttering an unkind word or passing judgment on others. She was the President of her Sunday School class and an active member of the Choir. Throughout her life she really enjoyed helping others, participating in several mission trips, volunteering for vacation bible school, becoming a Girl Scout troop leader, and visiting assisted living facilities to help bring cheer and fun to the residents.

Jo never judged a book by its cover, and she never met a stranger. She left all of us with a great example of how life should be lived…joyfully! She starred in a neighbor’s tv commercial for his business when she was 89 years old and even flew to Houston TX for her grandson’s wedding in April at the age of 90. She was an amazing person.

Jo is survived by her children Kimberly (Scott) Daily, Stuart Rush, Barbara Rush, grandchildren Nicholas Riebe, Kirsten (Austin) Lawrence, Alex (Chris) Quan, and Logan Rush, plus three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Bess (Melvin) Frame and brother Upton (Ann) S Martin.

Jo is preceded in death by her parents Upton Scott Martin, Jr. and Marian (Allen) Hirst, a younger brother John Allen (Pam) Martin, and her loving husband of 68 years Charles Robert Rush in 2022.

Memorial services to celebrate Jo’s life will be held on Monday, July 3rd, at 11:00 am, at First Baptist Church of Norfolk located at 312 Kempsville Rd. A light reception will follow to honor the wonderful life of this remarkable woman. Jo’s presence will be missed, but the seeds of kindness and grace she planted in our world will certainly live on.
