George Thomas Monroe Coombes passed peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, after a brief illness, at the age of 90. Born in Duluth, Minnesota, he called Virginia Beach and Florida home. He was an avid runner and athlete. A Navy veteran and salty Chief, he was a proud American, who served his country with honor during WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
Those who he called friend knew him as an honorable gentleman, a trusted “sea daddy,” with a true “Can Do” spirit and light-hearted nature—a man’s man. He was always two hours early—never a minute late—and true to his word. Often a prankster, his sense of humor endeared him to many. He will be loved and remembered by those whose lives he touched throughout the many seasons of his life, including his wife of recent years, daughters, son, siblings and vast extended family. As he was fond of saying, “Have a good day, but have a better tomorrow.”
Memorial Services scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Altmeyer Funeral Chapel, Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, VA. A social reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made at www.tmcfunding.com

To Gwen. I send you my love and condolences at the loss of your Dear One – George. You were a beautiful couple, he was so obviously devoted and in love with you. You were each fortunate to have found each other. I know you have many special memories of him to help you thru this difficult time. Here at The Reserve At Greenbrier, George was loved by all and were all treated to his humor. We miss him doing his charity work by collecting all the tin cans – it was his way of ‘giving back to the world’. I was unable to be at his service, but will drop you a note again by mail.
I’ll always remember him smiling and greeting everyone we knew him as pops at st Michael Lutheran church he will be missed greatly
Camille and Crystal,
I still remember your father’s smile and sense of humor, they are hard to forget. May he truly be at peace now and forever smile down on you both with love.
with love,
Carmen
Always a kind man. Heard many stories from my Dad about his “Sea Pappy”
