Flora Ober Goldman

November 18, 1921 - August 26, 2015

11/18/1921 - 08/26/2015

Norfolk – Flora Ober Goldman, longtime resident of Norfolk and lately, Beth Shalom Village, departed this world at noon on August 26th, 2015. She is the widow of Morris and mother of Michael who resides in Watsontown, PA. She was pre-deceased by her loving daughter Carol and her older sister Charlotte.  At the age of 93, when her frail body deserted her alert and critical mind, she simply went to sleep.
As can be attested by all who knew her — long-time members of the Norfolk Unitarian Church; and the several past Virginian Pilot Letters editors — “feisty” is the word most accurately used to describe this unique lady from New York. Though somewhat less than affluent, her passions and actions were always directed toward helping those who were less fortunate than she. Whether teaching elderly people to read; supporting the Norfolk SPCA and Public Library; knitting blankets for needy children; advocating gun control; sticking up for those who express unpopular views; arguing for civil rights; commiserating with like-minded individuals over various ills of our society; or as happened lately, becoming an avid (she rarely did anything “less-than-avidly”) internet correspondent.
Born in 1921, Flora was the daughter of an immigrant tailor who, like everyone else, was dumped into the Great Depression.  Doing her part, Flora was pressed into service for delivering racks of clothing up and down the NYC sidewalks . . . on skates.  It was here and in the troubled time that followed that she was exposed to the richly divergent economic and political theories that were abroad throughout the 30’s and beyond. Consequently, she was never fish nor fowl politically; but aside from her characteristic kvetching, she was a practicing humanist who, generously gave her money and belongings to others who needed them more then she — “It’s just ‘things’ ” she would say.
She was a good woman.
A memorial service will be held at a time and place to be announced. Those so inclined are urged to send memorial gifts in Flora’s name to: Beth Shalom Village, 6401 Auburn Dr, Virginia Beach, VA 23464. Shalom. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.altmeyerfh.com
