Celebrating the Life of Ernest Leroy Greenwood Jr.
Peacefully on April 24, 2023 surrounded by his loved ones Ernest Leroy Greenwood Jr. went home to be with the Lord. Ernest was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Ernest Leroy Greenwood Sr. and Elizabeth Greenwood and was the oldest of six children. He accepted Christ at an early age and attended Christ Tabernacle Baptist Church until he left Philadelphia to join the military.
Ernie or Bugsy as he was affectionately called by close family and friends attended Philadelphia public schools and immediately joined the military after graduating from high school. He began his military career with the Marines and four years later joined the Department of the Navy until retirement as a Chief Warrant Officer. Upon retirement from the Navy he worked for the City of Philadelphia as the Deputy Director for the Commission of Human Relations until his final retirement.
Ernest accepted his call to the ministry and was asked to preach the unadulterated word of God at various churches. Ernest stayed in Philadelphia, for a time after retirement from the City and in 2020 he along with several of his children and grandchildren moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Throughout his lifetime Ernest touched the lives of many people and even acted as a mentor to some of the young men whose path he crossed.
Ernest was preceded in death by his sisters Ranee G. Williams, Elizabeth Eloise Lewis, and Janice Greenwood. He leaves to cherish his memory a very special family member, Linda Greenwood, his children, Robette Lawrance (Dexter Sr.), twins, Ernest L. Greenwood III, and Sanee, another set of twins, Daniel and Alexandria (Ben), his siblings Vivian Greenwood, and Eileen (Robert) Parks, his grandchildren Lane, Taylor, Dexter Jr., Ashaureah, Zechariah, Gabrielle, Ernest IV, Anderson, Kalin, Kiyan, Tsenre, Zyonna, Za’niah, Destiny, Avery, Jamil, Daniel Jr., Jordyn, Rylee, Levi, Morgan, Cameron, Jayden, Jaylynn aka Tooka, his great grandchildren Eryn, Eli, Ethan, Kylie, King, Mikiah, Elisha, one aunt, Jessie Greenwood, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

A Celebration of Ernest’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 10am at Altmeyer Funeral Home Maestas Chapel, 1801 Baltic Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
