Elizabeth (Beth) Buzby String, 80, of Newport News, VA (formerly of Horsham, PA) passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 6, 2024. Beth was a beloved wife, mother, grammy, sister and aunt. Born in Philadelphia, PA on August 17, 1943, she is survived by her loving husband of over 58 years, Robert U. String. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Joseph H. Buzby and Elizabeth R. Buzby. Beth is also survived by her three children, Barbara String of Clinton, NJ, Robert M. String of Newport News, VA and Becky Flood (Randy) of Limerick, PA. She was a very
proud grandmother to Nicole Flood, Hanna Flood-Lorbacher (Tommy), Kathryn Miller and Grant Miller. She also leaves behind her sister, Suzanne R. Palmer (James), her niece, Jennifer C. Palmer (Ryan Gigliotti), her nephew Matthew Palmer (Erica) and great-niece, Annabelle Palmer.
Beth was a graduate of Hatboro-Horsham High School and attended Shippensburg University. She was a dedicated lifeguard, swim instructor and competitive
swimmer in her younger years.
As a child, Beth grew-up going to the beach in Ocean City, NJ and Beth and Bob continued this tradition with their own family. They also enjoyed going to Lake Wallenpaupack in Pennsylvania to go boating. She appreciated living close to the ocean when she moved to Virginia from Pennsylvania back in 1998 and enjoyed family trips to the Outer Banks. When they were younger, Beth and Bob were snow skiers and would head to Vermont in the winter to hit the slopes.
Beth was an avid Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan and watched their games faithfully. Her family all knew not to interrupt Grammy during a game, so Facetime calls were delayed until post-game. She liked to crochet and was talented and creative with arts and crafts projects. She enjoyed word games and would often spend time playing games on her iPad.
During her professional life, Beth was a florist, executive assistant, and ended her career as a Document Control Manager with Measurement Specialties, Inc. in Hampton, VA. She retired in 2018 after 25 years. She was known for being incredibly organized and detail oriented. She exceled at working with technical engineers.
The family is planning a private celebration of life.
