Edith C. Altmeyer, 79, passed away Monday, April 19, 2021 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Edi was born February 6, 1942 to the late Major General (Ret) Carl Darnell and Virginia Rodgers Stoney in Manhattan, Kansas. She graduated from the Laguna Blanca School in Santa Barbara, California and graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She met the love of her life, Jim, while visiting her father in Hawaii. They were engaged in eight weeks and married in six months. Jim and Edi were married on November 30, 1963 at Old Mission Santa Barbara in California.
Edi loved going to the sporting events of her four children and thirteen grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time on the beach, knitting, and had a passion for reading. Upon moving to Virginia Beach, Edi and Jim became involved in breeding Toy Poodles. One of their poodles, Susie, won “ PCA Best Toy Poodle in America.” She went on to compete at the Westminster Show in New York City. Above all else, her true love was spending time with her grandchildren.
Edi served many organizations faithfully in different capacities. She was a President and Board Member of the Florence Crittenton Services, Member of the Board of Directors for Wheeling Jesuit University, Board Member and President of the Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center in Wheeling, WV, member of The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, President and School Board Member of St. Vincent de Paul School, a member of the Social Outreach Program for Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Virginia Beach and Member of the Prison Ministries Services in both Wheeling, West Virginia and Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 57 years, James Emerson Altmeyer; children, James E. Altmeyer, Jr. (Jocelyn), Joanne A. High (Roger), Cameron A. Walsh all of Virginia Beach, and Charlotte A. Nicholson (Nick) of McLean, VA; siblings, John Stoney (Pam) of Santa Barbara, California and Alice Tencza of Cedar City, Utah; grandchildren, Simon, Eli and Justine Altmeyer, Alyse, Madeline, Alec and Ryan High, Charlotte and Colleen Walsh and Ava, Margaux, Veronica and Deia Nicholson.  She is also survived by many brothers & sisters-in-law and  countless nieces & nephews of the loving Altmeyer/Keeley Family.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, Virginia from 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Monday, April 26, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1404 Pacific Avenue in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I was a classmate of Edit’s at Laguna Blanca and spent many weekends at her home in Hope Ranch. She was a very dear friend. She was the class of 59 and I was the class of 58 and we spent wonderful times together. I saw her mentioned on the In Memoriam section of the Laguna Blanca magazine and wanted to offer my condolences to her family. Sincerely, Cristine Hackley Perkins, class of ’59
