Dr. David Jonas Holzsager

July 24, 1945 - April 25, 2022

07/24/1945 - 04/25/2022

David Jonas Holzsager, M.D., affectionately known as “Dr. David,” passed away peacefully on April 25, 2022. Dr. David began his life in New York City, living in Manhattan and Long Island in his early years. He followed in his father’s footsteps, pursuing a lifelong career in pediatrics, starting with a prestigious education at Cornell University and Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine.

After completing his education, Dr. David did an internship at Jacobi Pediatric Hospital and moved to Massachusetts to complete his residency at Boston Medical Center. There he began practicing medicine and met his wife, Denise, who predeceased him in February, 2020. Dr. David practiced in Massachusetts for several years before exploring a dream to move out west to California. Eventually the family returned to the East Coast to be closer to family, settling in Virginia.

David is survived by three children, his sons, Philip and Jonas, and daughter Lynne, two grandchildren Connor and Cate, and his twin sister Lisa.

During his life David was an avid skier and runner, a motorcycle rider, and aikido instructor. He was a science fiction and fantasy fan, and a lover of dad humor. During his later years he enjoyed cultivating beautiful gardens with Denise around his Yorktown properties, when not caring for patients in his signature Hawaiian shirts.

Dr. David was beloved not only by his family, but also by hundreds of patients. He will be dearly missed by many. A joint celebration of life will be held for David and Denise at a date to be announced by the family.

Dr. David,

I was one of your patients for 15+ years. I wanted too see you again, so I looked you up to see where you were practicing and I found this page. Thank you for all you did for me and I thoroughly enjoyed being your patient when I was younger. I had really wanted to stop in and see you again, but I had gotten so busy getting married and career building that I kept putting it off.

I’ve learned to manage my now adult ADHD and I’m finding great success in my career. You’d be proud, I’m sorry that I didn’t get to tell you this in person.

Thanks for everything. I will deeply and dearly miss you.

Dr. David you will be truely missed. I was your nurse from 1998 to 2002 you taught me so much. Remembering all the times I sent you out back at the Hampton roads location when you were having a bad day to cool off. You thanked me every time. You and Denise were close and dear friends to me. All my love. Debi Law LPN

My condolences go out to all the family. I was about 5 when I met him and was diagnosed with adhd. He was an amazing person to know. I actually had just saw him last year walking into world market. Previously me and my now wife were talking about where to take our kids and it brought back a flood of good memories and how much he would do for kids. He will forever remain in my heart and I have never stopped thinking or talking about him.

My daughter and I are truly saddened by the loss of Dr. Holzsager. We just found out today when we went for her yearly checkup. My daughter usually has something for him like a picture but today she wore a pink Hawaiian lei to give to him because of his Hawaiian shirts. He was a wonderful doctor and human being all around. I will miss his stories and especially his political rants that always made be laugh. I will be praying for strength and comfort for his family, friends, co-workers and patients.

My 2 daughters and I are deeply saddened by hearing of Dr. David’s passing. He started as my girl’s pediatrician the day they were born. He was not only a fantastic doctor, he was a warm trusted person that actually spent time talking to you and your children. I am heartbroken.

I was, and still am, very surprised and shocked to hear about Dr. David’s passing. He was an awesome doctor. We were blessed to have him as our son’s doctor for twenty years. God has called one of his children home. He is once again with his wife and soul mate. May he rest in peace. Dr. David, you will be missed. Thank you for our son’s care.

I was hoping Dr. Holtzseger was well and back at work when I took my grandson in for a check 5/5/22. I was in total shock when I saw his picture and the words “In Memory Of.” I could not believe it. Dr. Holtzseger was my children’s Dr. and was their children Dr., that’s how great of a pediatrician he was. We will definitely miss him. God’s blessing to the family.
