Dorothy Carolyn Sawyer went home to be with the Lord in the evening of December 29th, 2023 surrounded by her family. Dorothy was predeceased by both her mother and father, Ella Kathleen Frizzelle and Earl Frizzelle, as well as her five siblings (Hilda Rogerson, Florence Wooten, Bubba Frizzelle, Charles Frizzelle, and Willie Mark Frizzelle). She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Earnest, known as Ernie; two daughters – Kimberly Coffey (Tully) and Teri Bennett; as well as her granddaughter Emily Washburn (William); and soon to be great grandson Bennett Washburn.
Dorothy was born July 5, 1939 in Greenville, NC; raised in the small town of Farmville, NC and moved to Norfolk, VA in 1957. Though she moved to “the big city”, Dorothy never lost her North Carolina spirit and upbringing. She was often heard saying, “My mama said…” or talking about growing up as the child of a tobacco farmer, which as you can imagine was not one of ease, but Dorothy was known to look back on those days fondly.
Once living in Norfolk, Dorothy became a member of Azalea Garden Church of God and immersed herself into her new church family. She drove the school bus for the church for 10 years and then continued her career as a bus driver for another 36 years with Virginia Beach Public Schools. She was not someone to know a stranger. As soon as you met her, she would have her hands on you in embrace, especially if she liked a piece of clothing you were wearing. Because of her lack of shyness, many strangers, neighbors, and coworkers quickly became friends and friends became family.
Dorothy was a two-time survivor of breast cancer but ultimately succumbed to lung cancer. Throughout her life, her two cornerstones in life were her loyal and dedicated husband Ernie and her savior, Jesus Christ. Dorothy attributed all of her successes in life to her reliance on God and his loving grace. One of her favorite scriptures reads, “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Her family is consoled by the knowledge that their beloved “Dot”, “Mama”, “Mawmaw” is now not only at peace, but rejoicing with the Lord in Heaven as well as enjoying a reunion with her siblings and parents.
Visitation will be at 11am followed by a memorial service at Azalea Garden Church of God in Virginia Beach, VA on Thursday January 4, 2024 at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Dorothy’s name to the American Cancer Society by CLICKING HERE.

I am so so sorry to hear about Dorothy’s passing. Amanda saw it today. Dorothy was the sweetest neighbor anyone could have. I remember her teasing me about mismatched sheets, and Terri hung out with us, playing with my daughter “Holly”. Great times!! God Bless you all. She was a great Mama!
