Donald Edward Vaughn, Sr.

January 3, 1940 - September 29, 2016

01/03/1940 - 09/29/2016

Donald Edward Vaughn, Sr. passed away peacefully at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach on Thursday night, September 29, 2016, due to complications associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Donald was born on January 3, 1940 in Rochester, Pennsylvania, where he grew up learning a strong work ethic. As a high school student he excelled academically and played varsity football. After graduation from high school, he joined the US Marines, where in the early 1960s he deployed to Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Bay of Pigs. During his time in the Marines he also met his bride, now of 55 years, the former Bobbie Sue Long of Lincolnton, NC. Upon his departure from military service, he went on to study business at Gaston College and was subsequently employed by various companies as an accountant. Throughout his career he supported many road projects, including high-explosive terrain demolitions, and large-construction building projects in the southeastern US including Atlanta, Charlotte, Greenville and Columbia, SC, as well as many others. One of his more notable projects was as the comptroller for Metric Construction, Inc., the builder of the Charleston Omni Place Hotel in historic downtown Charleston, SC. After his employment with Metric, he and Bobbie remained in Charleston where he was employed by the US Postal Service, was a carrier for the Charleston News and Courier, and was a deacon at his church. Upon his retirement, he and Bobbie remained in Charleston until 2011, at which time they relocated to Virginia Beach.
Sadly, Don, Sr. lost his son, Don, Jr. on June 1, 2016 due to a sudden illness. Don, Sr. is survived by his loving wife Bobbie, daughter Nicki, son-in-law Bob, daughter-in-law Leigh, five grandchildren Kristen, Michael, Leisa, Megan, and Erin, and two great grandchildren Erika and Rylee. “Pawpaw” was loved and adored by all who knew him and he will truly be missed.
His family will celebrate his life during a private memorial service in Lincolnton, NC.
