Derek Leon Hill, passed away peacefully on the morning of December 7, 2016 at the age of 42 years. Derek courageously battled with, but eventually succumbed to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which is a rare, degenerative, and invariably fatal, brain disorder.
He was born on May 7, 1974 to David Allen Hill and Willye Nell Moorer in Mobile, Alabama. After high school, he joined the Navy where he proudly served his country for 20 years, retiring as a boatswain’s mate. He enjoyed all types of comic-books, great t.v. shows and a wide variety of music. But most of all, he loved his family and friends.
Derek was preceded in death by his father, David Allen Hill.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Renee Hill; children Isabella, Alexander and Keyla; mother, Willye Nell Hill; brothers, David, Jamie, Chieko and Devin; sister, Davida, many of his nieces & nephews and family & friends.
A funeral service will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home-Southside Chapel (5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, VA) on December 14, 2016 at 10:30 AM followed by a procession to Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.

I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Derek in life but I attended the memorial service today and I know that as a nurse, fellow Superman fan and Lois Lane costumer that I was supposed to be there today to honor a man who so loved by many, with the infectious smile and passionate singing. Thank you for your service and may you rest in peace. I know you are flying now, like you dreamt about.

To the friends and family of Derek, please accept my condolences for your loss. The pain and grief can seem unbearable, and at such times we need to go to God’s Word for comfort. The Bible teaches that death is an enemy (1 Corinthians 15:26) That same scripture verse also states “it is to be brought to nothing.” That is because God promises in His word death will be eradicated and because of the enemy death being destroyed the dead will live again (Isaiah 26:19).  So yes, there is a hope that God reassures, that our dear love ones will be brought back to life in the near future. That thought comforts me, and I hope it does you the same.

I served with Derek. When he was smiling and laughing it was infectious. When he was stoic… you listened. Fair winds and following seas Boats.
