Darlene “Sam” Beverly Halvorsen, 76, of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving husband and family on January 26, 2022, at Accordius Health at River Pointe Assisted living facility in Virginia Beach. 
Darlene was born on October 1, 1945, to William and Betty (Lyle) Simonton at in Cincinnati, Ohio.  She was the oldest and last surviving of eight siblings.
Sam is survived by her loving spouse, Henry “Hank” Halvorsen, Two Daughters and two sons and their spouses. Brenda & Keith Simmons; Cathy & Terri Handley; Hank & Gina Halvorsen 3rd and Michael & Dawn Halvorsen.  She was also blessed with 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild
She was preceded in death by her father, William Finley Simonton, Mother, Betty Eileen Simonton, Daughter, Tracy McGowan and grandson Ryan Burke
Sam’s main passion was her family.  She loved supporting her children’s and grandchildren’s activities.  She was an energetic supporter on the sidelines of her children’s and grandchildren’s games. Sam assisted in organizing youth programs in Rota Spain and Naval station Oceana.  She was the Team Mom coordinator for all base wide little league sports teams
Sam’s other passion was flowers and gardening, spanning over 35 years. She also served as President of the Aragon Garden Club and member of the Lake Smith Garden club.  Sam was an accredited State and National flower show judge. She organized, competed, and judged in numerous flower shows, designing and winning numerous local and national awards for her design work. Sam also enjoyed working with the city of Virginia Beach on beautification projects for the city. She coordinated flower arrangements for the senior ball during Harbor Fest week.
Sam will be truly and deeply missed by all her friends and family
Memorial service being held on Saturday, February 5, 2022, 4:30 pm at the Altmeyer Funeral Home – Southside Chapel.

I remember “Sam” as if it was yesterday at NAS Oceana civic league. What a wonderful person, she was well loved by everyone. Our sincere condolences to Hank and the family.
