Dale Phillip Myers

April 29, 1933 - February 18, 2018

04/29/1933 - 02/18/2018

Dale Phillip Myers (Captain, USN, Retired), a remarkable gentleman and gentle man, passed away peacefully on February 18th.  Born in 1933 in Baraboo, Wisconsin, Dale spent his teenage years in Orange County, California before graduating with degrees in Landscape Architecture and Horticulture from California Polytechnic Institute (San Luis Obispo) in 1955.  He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Jeanette “Jan” Bettinger Myers; children Pam Goggins (Jim), Karen Woodard (Pope), Chip Myers; and grandchildren Trey, Caroline and Eliza Goggins, Madeline and Peter Myers and Libby, Jay and Meg Woodard. He is predeceased by his son, Eric Myers.  Dale’s career as a naval officer and helicopter pilot spanned 31 years and included deployments to Antarctica, Thailand, South America, Vietnam, Wales, remote islands in the Pacific and Adak, Alaska. He served as a squadron commander, wing commander and commanding officer of naval stations in Brawdy, Wales and Philadelphia, PA.  Known fondly to his grandchildren as “Dadoo”; Dale shared with family and friends his many passions, including: travel, gardening, landscape design, painting, reading, writing, woodcarving, computer graphics, photography and poetry. During his second career as a landscape architect, Dale designed local gardens, volunteered for public beautification projects and designed Buff’s Garden at 47th Street and Oceanfront Avenue. Dale’s family will continue to be inspired by Dale’s life of generosity, devotion and kindness. To honor his inspiring life, kindly make memorial donations to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad (www.vbvrs.org ) or a charity of your choice.  Following a private funeral mass, burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
Arrangements under the care of Altmeyer’s Oceanfront Home, condolences may be left to the family below.

Our sincere sympathy to Jan and all the family. It was a privilege to have met Captain Myers. We cherish sharing his visit to The Clark for the Van Gogh exhibit a few years back, and sitting with you both at Trey and Noël’s wedding. You are in our prayers
