Barbara Lyn (Feather) LaJaunie Hammesfahr, beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2023, in Suffolk, Virginia. She was born on August 11, 1944, in Lebanon, Kentucky. Barbara was 79 years old at the time of her passing.

Barbara had a remarkable academic career, demonstrating her passion for knowledge and learning throughout her life. She obtained her undergraduate degree from the prestigious University of Kentucky, further pursuing her education by earning a Masters degree from Tulane University. Her dedication to her studies led her to achieve the highest academic honor, a PhD.

Having dedicated many years to her profession, Barbara retired from Averett University. Her hard work and commitment to education left a lasting impact on her colleagues and students alike.

Beyond her academic pursuits, Barbara found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. She cherished spending quiet moments with her beloved cat “Izzy,” and happily reading her favorite books while cuddling her feline companion.

Barbara is preceded in death by her loving husband, Louis LaJaunie, as well as her second husband, “Jack” Hammesfahr. Although she has left this world, her memory will forever be treasured by those who survive her, including her two sons, Richard LaJaunie and Stephen LaJaunie, and her caring brother, Charles (Helena) Feather. She also leaves behind close friends who deeply mourn her loss.

A graveside service will be held on August 22nd at 1:00pm at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia. This solemn occasion will allow family and friends to gather, celebrate Barbara’s life, and bid farewell to a remarkable woman who has touched their hearts in immeasurable ways. May her soul find eternal peace, and may those who carry her memory in their hearts find solace and comfort during this difficult time.
