Arthur Etheridge Murray

Arthur Etheridge Murray, 87 “Jack” Passed away peacefully at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital with family at his side. Jack was the son of Paul F. Murray Sr. and Mary Etheridge Murray and had one brother Paul F. “Pat” Murray Jr. who passed in 2007. Paul, Sr. was an Hotelier who had the Murray’s Hilltop House and the Aeolus Hotel and was also the Mayor of Virginia Beach from 1952-1954. Jack is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy; son Mike who resides in Maui with his wife Tami. Daughter Elaine McConnell and husband Mark, who own the Sandbridge Island Restaurant, and their son Mason who was the light of Jack’s life and his only grandson.
Jack and Dorothy owned and operated the Tide’s Motor Hotel and Lodge on 21st street and Atlantic ave and later The Beach Carousel on 13th and Pacific ave. He was a longtime volunteer and lifetime member of the Virginia Beach Rescue squad (Station #14). Jack also served in the US Coast Guard, was a volunteer of the American Red Cross, a ranger at Seashore State Park and helped in several youth groups.
The family wishes that no flowers be sent to the funeral home; however a donation can be made to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad Station 14 in his name. The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home Maestas Chapel on 18th and Baltic, Wednesday, June 1 from 5-8 P.M. A private burial will follow on a later date.
