Anna Hurt Deal has left this life for the next, far too soon. She is survived by her son Carlton Deal, Jr and his wife Shannon, and their children Brittany (Ani) and Parker and his wife Ashley; by her daughter Jennifer Jacoby, her husband Bill, and their children Brandon, Lauren, and Derek; by her ex-husband Carlton, Sr; and by her sister Helen Wiech, her husband Bob, and their son Chris and their daughter Sarah.
Anna was very proud to have been born in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up as a Coast Guard kid and moved with her family many times around the U.S. Anna attended Princess Anne High School, met Carlton Sr at Old Dominion University and they were married in 1963. They divorced in 1994, but continued to love and care for each other in subsequent years.
Anna had many jobs through the years. She worked as a legal assistant and a school teacher, had a vitamin business, sold fragrance, and ran a health food store. She loved singing and acting and, most of all, telling stories of God’s Amazing Grace.
Anna became a follower of Jesus in 1971 at Virginia Beach Community Chapel through the ministry of Dick Woodward. She loved the Lord with all her heart and shared His love openly with everyone she met.
Anna loved her family, and she never met a stranger. Everyone who knew her would describe her as overflowing with joy, with life, with hope, and an unshakeable conviction that ‘the best is yet to come.’ Her family believes she is experiencing that now, in the presence of the Lord she loved so much.
The memorial service for Anna will be at Tabernacle Church of Norfolk, 7000 Granby St. in Norfolk on Saturday, October 10, 2020. All are welcome. Please wear a mask and maintain social distancing. You are welcome to arrive at 11:00am and the service will begin at 11:30am. Please bring a flower to place in her memory, and anything you would like to contribute to a memory book. Anna will be buried on October 13, 2020 in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Jennifer and her family live. Condolences may be left for Anna’s family below.

What a joy it must be to lay down crowns at Jesus’ feet. Anna, better known to me as Carlton’s Mom, had many crowns. There are too many stories of her caring that can be typed on this tiny phone—yes, typed. Among everything else, she was my typing teacher! Along with my Mom, she was ever joyful and supporting. It’s nice to think that they’re probably singing together right now or maybe giggling about their role in the blessings and absurdities of Norfolk Christian High School. I have and will continue to pray for the Deal family, and especially for my dear friend Carlton. Anna, tell my Mom hello.

We graduated with Anna from Princess Anne High School in 1959! Anna was a friend to all and dearly loved all of her high school classmates! In her later years, she had many health issues and never lost her upbeat spirit and her love for God! Anna, you are one of God’s special angels! You are with your Lord and free of pain! You will be sorely missed by all of your classmates, PAHS Class of ‘59! Rest In Peace, sweet Anna!

I met and got to know Anna while we sold fragrance together at many department stores. She was a wonderful sweet & kind Christian. She always had that wonderful smile whenever she saw anyone. I know she is thrilled to be pain free and with our Lord Jesus Christ.

I was saddened to learn of the loss of our friend Anna.
Her “joy of the Lord,” her smiles for all, and love for her son and daughter and family are precious memories. Her kindness was felt by us, those years as our friend at the Va. Bch Community Chapel. We watched Anna and Carlton with great pride for their children, at NCS, especially in music.
Our prayer and hearts are with the family during this difficult time. Loving memories for Anna will carry on forever; “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” – Matthew 5:4

I’ll miss our texting, Anna. I know you are with Jesus and I know you are over joyed. I am relieved for you that you are pain free, finally and you’ll stay beautiful and young. I know you will enjoy your new home. You will be missed by many, Anna but that’s just us being selfish. Dr Shepard sure did he best at working miracles for your eyes. Soar with the angels, Anna… ⚘
