Nancy Amanda Meiggs Loessin died on January 20, 2024. She was born on March 13, 1936, in her grandmother’s home in Cradock, VA. Everyone brought jonquils and she was forever known as The Jonquil Babe. Amanda grew up in Moyock, NC, and Cradock, VA, where she graduated in 1954 in the last class in the original high school building. During her high school years, she began her theatrical life as she performed on stage and radio in school. She began her college career as a theater major at Woman’s College UNC Greensboro and later transferred to UNC Chapel Hill where she continued her work on stage and university television productions. Upon graduation in 1958, she was hired by the
Durham Star Theater and played several roles before moving to New York City.

After a serious illness, she returned to UNC Chapel Hill where she taught, performed, and received a master’s degree. In 1967, she was hired by East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, as an artist-in-residence for the theater department and there met her husband, Edgar Ray Loessin. Edgar and Amanda worked, loved, laughed, and danced together during their 43 years of marriage. She continued to perform and teach as
needed over the next 23 years.

While in Greenville, she cared for her parents, volunteered as an observer for the League of Women Voters, and served on the first city commission for recycling. In 1992, Amanda and Edgar moved to Norfolk, VA, where they continued to support the arts, travel, and
enjoy their cottage in Kitty Hawk, NC. They moved to Harbor’s Edge Retirement Community in 2007. Amanda is preceded in death by her parents George and Nancy Meiggs, her brother George R. Meiggs, and her husband Edgar Ray Loessin. She is survived by her sister Catherine Elizabeth Rose of Gettysburg, PA, brother-in-law Larry Loessin and wife Henri Jean of Pearland, TX, numerous nephews and nieces,
