Algina “Gina” M. Johnson was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. On Saturday, May 20, 2023, she passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family after a year-long battle with cancer. Gina was born in Belcourt, North Dakota on the Turtle Mountain Reservation to Algina M. Enno. Her maiden name of Marcil, she was the youngest of 7 children with 4 older brothers and 2 older sisters.

Gina’s mother passed away when she was only 11 months old. She was then raised by a close friend of her mother’s in Belcourt, ND. When she was old enough to start school, she was sent off to an Indian boarding school. She attended Wahpeton Indian School and would tell stories of what it was like. After age 12, she would spend time living with several of her older siblings where she was more like an older sister than an aunt to her nieces and nephews. She was proud to be Native American and encouraged her children and grandchildren to learn about and appreciate their culture and history.

In 1957, she graduated from Minot High School and afterwards worked for the telephone company.  In 1962, she married Lyle “Jake” Johnson in Coeur d’Alene, ID. They had 4 children: Christine, Gabriella (formerly Russell), William and Julie. Jake and Gina were married for 48 years at the time of his passing in 2010. Gina was preceded in death by her husband Jake, her daughter Christine and her siblings Alex, Alfred, Joseph, Lillian, Albert and Delima.

Gina loved sewing and was an excellent seamstress. She often made clothing and other items for her children and grandchildren. Family and friends always knew they could count on her when they needed alterations. She also enjoyed gardening, and traveling, especially road trips. She made several coast-to-coast road trips across the country moving and visiting friends and family. She was happiest when spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her children Gabriella, William, and Julie (husband Gabriel); her grandchildren, James, Cody, Jack, Maya, Michael and Ysabella; and her great-grandchildren, Gavin and Tandyn.

Services will be held at Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, NV on Friday, June 30 at 11:00.

So very sorry Julie and the rest of the Helms / extended Johnson family. I’m sure Gina is smiling her in her quiet way right now, and patting Jake’s arm as she stands close beside him, and appreciating all of the family and friends who are gathered together today. Hopefully you are telling lots of wonderful stories about the “old days”, and taking photos and remembering all the good times… Love and prayers for you all! Liz
